{"id":852,"date":"2009-04-29T22:17:01","date_gmt":"2009-04-30T03:17:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sox35th.com\/?p=852"},"modified":"2009-04-29T22:17:53","modified_gmt":"2009-04-30T03:17:53","slug":"the-first-month-is-the-deepest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.sox35th.com\/index.php\/852\/the-first-month-is-the-deepest","title":{"rendered":"The First Month is the Deepest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having wrapped up their first month of baseball with the merciless slaughter of the <a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/mlb\/standings\/index.jsp?ymd=20090429\">Best in the West<\/a>, the Sox&#8217; April breaks down as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>vs KC: 1-2<\/li>\n<li>vs MIN: 2-1<\/li>\n<li>@ DET: 1-1<\/li>\n<li>@TB: 3-1<\/li>\n<li>@BAL: 1-2<\/li>\n<li>vs TOR: 1-2<\/li>\n<li>vs SEA: 2-1<\/li>\n<li>Road: 5-4<\/li>\n<li>Home: 6-6<\/li>\n<li>Overall: 11-10<\/li>\n<li>One-Run Games: 3-2<\/li>\n<li>Longest Winning Streak: 3<\/li>\n<li>Longest Losing Streak: 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So with one month in the books, what do we know about these White Sox?<\/p>\n<p><strong>WIN BIG OR DON&#8217;T BOTHER:<\/strong> The Sox are 8-1 when they score six runs or more; the Sox are also 3-10 when they score five or fewer. Three and ten.<\/p>\n<p>Three and ten. Roll right while Moss goes deep!<\/p>\n<p><strong>IT TRULY IS JUST LIKE OLD TIMES:<\/strong> Bartolo Colon is having a better season than Gavin Floyd. The last time that happened, Brian Anderson was a huge question mark in center field and Scott Podsednik did some time in Charlotte. Mark Buehrle was off to a shaky start and Jose Contreras struggled to recapture the magic that had briefly made him a star. Bobby Jenks looked less reliable than the fire-breathing beast that ended the season prior and. . . you know, we&#8217;ll just stop right there. The analogy only gets more depressing as you take it deeper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HOWEVER, GAVIN FLOYD LEADS THE STAFF IN STRIKEOUTS:<\/strong> This seems wrong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC HAS YET TO HAMPER MATT THORNTON:<\/strong> Told you so.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMAGINE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HE STARTS HITTING:<\/strong> Carlos Quentin has eight homers and a .253 average. That&#8217;s 63 home runs in a 150-hit season and 77 home runs in a 180-hit season. Seventy-seven. Believe.<\/p>\n<p>But statistical hilarity aside, the more telling part lies in the team records. They can&#8217;t win a lot, but can&#8217;t really lose a lot either. They won&#8217;t sweep anyone, but will avoid the embarrassment of having it happen to them.
