The 35th Street Post Office

After much delay, we present the long-awaited 35th Street mailbag. In this edition, your editor answers your questions about trading with the A’s, guest writers, and why he refuses to keep hope alive.

Andrew –

What do you think the odds are the Sox land Huston Street? [Oakland GM Billy] Beane’s going to want a lot for him, but a package of Fields and any of our recent call-up pitchers could probably get it done.

– James, Tinley Park

James –

Street would be a great pickup, even if he’s having a slightly down year, and as evidenced by the deterioration of two relievers and the implosion of a third they could use the insurance. However, I’m not sure the Sox are in a position to carry two closers, and if Street really is moving this year he’ll probably get a lot more in return than what the Sox have to offer. On the other hand, it would be nice to even the score on that Swisher trade.

Mr. Reilly –

Why are you so down on the White Sox’ chances? If you take the time to blog about them (almost) every day and care enough to talk so much about them, why not enjoy the good time while it lasts? And were you so negative throughout 2005? Because we all know how that turned out.

Sure it’s not always the best baseball they’re playing. But a win is a win and it doesn’t get any better than first place.

– Rich, Franklin Park

Rich –

I just don’t see enough balance in this year’s team to carry them. Winning 10-8 is always cool, but after the Rangers and Royals of the world have all gone gome, it’s no longer about which GM put together the best softball team. I can’t begrudge anyone for dreaming big, but I’m just not convinced. That year you mention, by the way, was actually much more encouraging because we were all hoping for more realistic things like small bunches of hits and runners advancing rather than late-inning rallies and walk-off home runs. If I recall correctly, I think I started believing as early as August 1.

Andrew and Sox 35th Staff –

I was just curious where and how you find your guest bloggers. They have been quite enjoyable. They have also been a nice change of pace from your regular writing. . . although I could do without the guys from the Cubs blog ever coming back!

– Denise, South Loop

Denise –

Thanks for the kind(?) words on our new feature. One of the things that I didn’t like about the old site was the monotony of people reading nothing but me and my words expressing my ideas which I formed all by myself. Not that I don’t enjoy it, but sometimes it’s fun to let others do the talking. So far we’ve done everything by invitation to blogs or writers somewhat in line with what the 35th Street Review is about, except for Jeff Parker who has been a friend of this since it was still the old site.

Speaking of which, this weekend we’ll have a trifecta of guest writers, and I think you’ll like what our honored invitees came up with. Of course, you’re welcome to send something in as well; I strive to be an ally to the aspiring sportswriters of the world.
