King Salomon

Well, so much for the Good Guys possibly signing a local hero:

Milwaukee also could have paid [Salomon] Torres a $300,000 buyout, but instead retains the rights of the 12-year veteran if he decides to play next season.

For those scratching their heads, Torres has been one of the sturdier starters-turned-relievers of the past few years, putting together a highly respectable run between 2004 and the first half of 2007 with the Pirates, and getting his game back last season with the Brewers. All told, this sounds exactly like the kind of reclamation project Kenny Williams, Ozzie Guillen, Don Cooper et al would take on but those shrewd Brewers played this one wisely.

You may wonder why any Sox fan would care so much for this particular nonspectacular pitcher. The answer, simply put, is that Torres is the kind of one-pitch pitcher these Sox could use.

Which one pitch? This one:

Whichever road you choose, thank you Mr. Torres for your moment of greatness.
